Overview
The Arctic and offshore patrol ships (AOPS) will:
- be dedicated to a range of critical missions, including North Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) patrols
- operate as the primary conservation and protection enforcement vessels on Canada’s east coast, replacing existing Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) offshore patrol vessels
- have ice capable functionality that will allow the CCG to expand its patrol capability into the low Arctic

Current status
- In May 2019, the Government of Canada announced that, as part of an investment to renew the CCG fleet, Irving Shipbuilding Inc. will build 2 additional AOPS that will be adapted for the CCG, often referred to as AOPS 7 and 8
- On November 1, 2019, the design contract for the project was awarded to Irving Shipbuilding Inc.
- The preliminary design review was completed in June 2020, and the final design review was completed in fall 2022
- Construction of AOPS 7 began in August 2023
The year ahead
- Construction work will continue on AOPS 7
- The steel cutting for AOPS 8 will take place in 2024
