Join the Canadian General Standards Board in celebrating World Standards Day

October 14, 2023 marks the 53rd World Standards Day. This day highlights the work of professionals working in this field, and the impact that standardization has on many facets of our lives, even though it very often goes unnoticed.

This year’s theme is “A shared vision for a better world”. Once again, the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) and the Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) join the international community and standardization organizations in marking this important day.

CGSB, part of Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC)’s Receiver General and Pension Branch, is one of 15 standards development organizations in Canada accredited by the SCC. As such, it provides services in support of the economic, regulatory, procurement, health, safety and environmental interests of consumers, government and industry.

The CGSB would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers and professionals who support the standardization network in Canada and around the world. Thanks to their efforts, the world is a safer, healthier place.

The day is also an opportunity to highlight the influence of standardization on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). For some years now, these objectives have often been at the heart of government projects, and the same is true at CGSB. The SDGs, which aim to reduce social inequalities, develop a sustainable economy and curb climate change, are extremely ambitious. Each standard, notwithstanding its subject, aims to promote sustainability within its respective industry. Examples include petroleum standards, agri-food standards, building and construction standards, etc.
