What is pension portability?

Have you recently entered or left the federal public service? If so, you may be able to transfer your pensionable service into or out of the PSSA through one of the pension portability provisions of the PSSA. This Pension portability information package is intended to provide you with general information regarding pension portability options under the PSSA. You should carefully consider all of your options before deciding which one is best for you. These options are Pension transfer agreements PTA (PTA) and Service buyback - Glossary (also known as elective service). To learn more about these options you may explore the following links within this package:

Note

A reciprocal transfer agreement (RTA) was another mechanism used in the past to facilitate mobility between employers. All but 6 RTAs have expired. Only those employees who transferred out as part of one of the group transfers may be eligible to transfer back in under the same RTA. No new RTA agreements will be negotiated.

This information package may not answer questions specifically related to your situation. You are therefore encouraged to contact the Pension Centre for additional information. In this instance, an individualized information package will be provided.
